In mhd. Zeit als forme aus lat. forma entlehnt, galt das Wort zunächst nur in dessen konkreter Grundbedeutung »äußere Gestalt, Umriss«, dann auch im Sinne von »Muster, Modell (zur Herstellung einer bestimmten Form)«, und im Sinne von »Art und Weise; Gepräge, eigentümlicher Charakter, ‹seelische› Verfassung«. An diese Bedeutungen schließen sich an: formen »modellieren; gestalten, bilden« (mhd. formen); ...förmig »von bestimmter Gestalt, von bestimmtem Ausdruck« (mhd.), heute nur noch als Hinterglied von Zusammensetzungen wie einförmig und gleichförmig. Aus dem sozialen Bereich, wo das Wort »Form« etwa die Art und Weise, den Stil zwischenmenschlicher Kontakte, insbesondere auch die guten oder schlechten Manieren im Umgang bezeichnet, sind zu nennen die Adjektive förmlich »gezwungen, steif« (mhd. formelich »vorbildhaft; schicklich«) und formlos »ungezwungen« (mhd. formelos »ohne Form, gestaltlos«), ferner die Zusammensetzung Umgangsformen. – Zu lat. forma, das vielleicht Lehnwort aus griech. morphē̓ »Gestalt« ist (eventuell durch etrusk. Vermittlung), stellen sich zahlreiche Bildungen, die in unserem Fremdwortschatz eine Rolle spielen. Dazu gehören: lat. formalis »zur Form gehörig; äußerlich« (↑ formal, ↑ Formalität, ↑ Formalismus, ↑ formalistisch, ↑ formell), lat. formare »formen, gestalten; einrichten, ordnen« (↑ formieren, ↑ Format), lat. formula »kleine Form, Gestalt; Norm, Maßstab, Bestimmung« (↑ Formel, ↑ Formular, ↑ formulieren), ferner lat. con-formare »entsprechend (harmonisch) formen, bilden, passend einrichten, anordnen« (↑ konform, ↑ Konformismus), lat. de-formare »abformen; verformen« (↑ deformieren, ↑ Deformation), lat. in-formare »eine Gestalt geben, formen; durch Unterweisung bilden« (↑ informieren, ↑ Information), lat. re-formare »umgestalten, umbilden, neu gestalten« (↑ reformieren, ↑ Reformation, ↑ Reform, ↑ Reformator), lat. trans-formare »umformen, verwandeln« (↑ Transformator), schließlich noch lat. uni-formis »einförmig; einfach« (↑ Uniform).
